Back in February we were more than pleased to host Rose for her work experience placement from Durrington High School. An opportunity for her to get a flavour of what goes on behind the scenes in the day-to-day running at Baked, we wanted it to be as hands-on as possible, providing her with a real sense of what goes on in the workplace and to gain some skills and experience.
In her own words, here is what she thought of her time with us.
“I chose to do my work experience at Baked because of my love for baking – it especially stood out to me due to the friendly atmosphere in the café and the delicious homemade cakes and brownies made there each day. I’d visited Baked before the placement and had loved the whole environment because of the community feel to it.
The week was very hands on and I was given the opportunity to help make the cakes and interact with customers. It was really nice to be able to learn lots of new skills involved with baking, which have helped me with the baking I do at home. It was also interesting to learn and see all of the recipes used to make the cakes and to be able to have the chance to help with baking them.
Everyone at Baked was very welcoming and nice throughout the whole week and put in a lot of effort to make it interesting and enjoyable. It is a particularly useful placement for anyone interested in going into the catering field, although it’s still beneficial if you just enjoy baking as a hobby.
One of my favourite parts of the week was having the chance to make a cake of my choice by myself and being able to decide on how I wanted to ice it. At the end of the week, I was allowed to take it home to share with my family. I especially liked the independence given to me whilst I was on the placement, which allowed me to learn and enjoy it as much as I did. I had such a lovely time for the whole week and will definitely keep popping in for brownies!”
